Description

Full-time high school School Nurse for the school district working for 8 hours/day for nine (9) months - academic school year.

 

Qualifications:           

The person in this position should have the following credentials:

  1. Must have a current, active, unrestricted North Dakota Nursing License
  2. Registered Nurse with Bachelors Degree (RN, BSN)
  3. Minimum of one (1) year experience in public health nursing, community health nursing, school health nursing or pediatric nursing (preferred)
  4. American Heart Association CPR certified (or obtain in the first 6 months)

Associate Superintendent Elementary / Building Principals

 

Goal:

School nursing is a specialized practice of professional nursing that advances the well being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. To that end, school nurses facilitate positive student responses to normal development; promote health, safety and wellness; intervene with actual and potential health problems; provide case management services; and actively collaborate with others to build student and family capacity for adaptation, self-management, self-advocacy and learning.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

  1. Function as a health resource and liaison among students, school personnel, families and health care providers concerning health promotion and wellness.
  2. Provide limited, immediate short-term care to students with an injury or illness. Will notify parent/guardian should student need to be sent home or need further medical attention.
  3. Provide education and/or coordinate training for appropriate staff relative to Individualized Health Care Plans (diabetes, seizures, etc.) and Action Plans (asthma & allergy/anaphylaxis); provide health education directly to individual students as needed and in the classroom setting as requested.
  4. All nursing actions will be in accordance with the scope of practice of the North Dakota Board of Nursing and Grand Forks Public Schools policies and procedures.
  5. Function as a health team member providing preceptorship to nursing students and new nurse orientees.
  6. Report communicable diseases and critical/emergency situations to the principal in a timely manner as required.
  7. Observe Universal Precautions while teaching/showing others to do the same.
  8. Maintain the dignity, privacy and confidentiality of students in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines.
  9. Follow school policy regarding contacting parents and releasing students.
  10. Maintain health supplies and documentation of persons seen in health room and nursing interventions provided.
  11. Provide reports as required by North Dakota Department of Health; copies to respective principals.
  12. Assume responsibility for monitoring student immunizations as required by law.
  13. Performs screening and referral for health conditions, such as vision screening.
  14. Administer medication to students according to school policies and guidelines (this only applies to schools where there is a nurse present on a daily basis and at the time of scheduled administration).
  15. Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the building principals and/or assistant superintendent of elementary and/or secondary education.
  16. Provide medication training to staff (designated by the school principal) who will be administering medication.
  17. Train (or oversee training of), assess competence, monitor, and evaluate unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP) in caring out specific health care procedures as defined in the Individual Healthcare Plan (IHP). Maintain accurate documentation of training and monitoring.
