Description

This position is for the 2020-2021 school year.

 

Terms of Employment: Nine (9) months, academic school year

Hours:  7:55 am - 3:55 pm (40 hrs / week)

 

Possibility of additional hours for summer school.

 

 

Education:  Associate degree or an equivalent two years of college education required.  Bachelor’s degree preferred.

 

Qualifications: Completion of an interpreter preparation program or equivalent experience required.  Competent in the use of spoken and written English.  Ability to communicate with students whose preferred communication mode is Manually Coded English, Pidgin English and/or American Sign Language.  Ability to provide interpreting/transliterating (expressive and voice) required.

 

Reports To:  Student’s Case Manager, Special Education Coordinator, and Building Principal.

 

Job Goal:  To facilitate communication among hearing-impaired students and their hearing peers, the classroom teacher, and other personnel in the school system.

 

Responsibilities: 

  1. Provide expressive and voice interpreting for hearing impaired students in mainstream classes.
  1. Preparing for interpreting assignments by studying content area, lesson plans, outlines, etc; and perhaps meeting with students to mutually decide on needed signs to translate vocabulary and information unique to a particular subject area. 
  1. Establishing physical setting in conjunction with the classroom teacher to optimize communication interaction. 
  1. Meeting with classroom teacher as needed in regard to communication needs of the student. 
  1. Providing information to the classroom teacher, student, and other staff on how to maximize benefit from interpreting services. 
  1. Participate in staffings, parent conferences, and IEP meetings providing insight on the success of communication strategies. 
  1. Assist in providing orientations to deafness to hearing students and staff. 
  1. Provide interpreting for extra-curricular activities, telephone calls, workshops, parent meetings when necessary. For activities and meetings scheduled outside of the normal contracted hours, compensation will be received. 
  1. Provide tutoring for hearing impaired students when necessary and when interpreting is not needed. 
  1. Complete other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
