Position for the 2020-2021 School Year

 

This posting covers multiple positions at various schools throughout the upcoming school year.

The first day of school is August 31, 2020.

 

Hours:  32.5 hrs/week, M-F, nine (9) months, academic school year of the students enrolled

 

Education: High School Diploma or High School Equivalency

 

Qualifications: Ability to work with a variety of student behaviors and educational needs in a

variety of educational settings primarily consisting of specialized special education classrooms.  Ability to work as a team member, demonstrates human relations skills, and demonstrates effective communication skills.

 

A minimum of two years of experience supporting individuals with disabilities (e.g., autism, emotional disturbance, physical handicaps requiring personal cares) preferred.

 

Reports To: Supervising Teacher, Building Administrator

 

Responsibilities:  Assists students with disabilities in a variety of school settings, including specialized classrooms, under the supervision of teachers/related services personnel. Disabilities include autism, emotional disturbance, physical impairments, intellectual disabilities, adult transition (18-21 years of age) and alternate settings (e.g., STEP Program). Responsibilities may include all or several of the following:

  1. Assist in carrying out activities and learning experiences to achieve goals and objectives listed in the students' Individual Educational Plans.
  2. Assist students in instructional activities through curriculum modification and adaptations in conjunction with the planning and supervision of the special education teacher.
  3. Assist students who have limited mobility, as needed.
  4. Assist in monitoring adaptive equipment, including but not limited to, hearing aids/auditory trainers, standers, splints, braces, assistive technology devices, wheelchairs, and feeding devices.
  5. Assist students in the development of self-help skills including, but not limited to, feeding, toileting, and dressing to allow the student to benefit from the school environment.
  6. Assist in the provision of accommodations including, but not limited to, diapering, positioning, reading and writing.
  7. Assist students in developing self-management skills.
  8. Assist teachers in classroom management and in the carrying out of positive behavior support plans.
  9. Assist students in loading and unloading safely from buses and vans.
  10. Assist students in other ways as assigned by supervisors.
  11. Participate in professional development, including program specific training and behavioral de-escalation, to acquire specific skills needed to perform responsibilities.
  12. Participate in training related to the provision of medication and/or specific positioning or feeding needs, as provided by the building nurse.
  13. Promote learning environments that are student-centered and supportive where through effective communication and relationship building.
  14. Maintain a high level of ethical behavior.

Performing the job duties of this position requires the following physical demands: lift fifty (50) lbs. occasionally, additional occasional lifting less that 50 lbs., reaching, standing, walking, carrying, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, sitting, and/or crawling.

 

The employee may encounter situations where students are physically aggressive and/or verbally abusive. This may require physical interaction (using strategies acquired through de-escalation and restraint training) between the employee and student. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be exposed to infection at a greater risk than the average person. May be directly responsible for the safety, well-being and/or output of students.
