HOME SCHOOL MONITOR RESPONSIBILITIES
The home school monitor must monitor in accordance with section 15.1-23-07 of Century Code.
Required monitoring of progress – Reporting progress and compensation
Monitoring is required if the parent has less than a high school diploma or GED. Additionally, monitoring is required if a child scores below the fiftieth (50%) percentile on the nationally normed standardized assessment.
If monitoring is required, the school district will assign and compensate an individual to monitor a child receiving home education. The individual assigned must be licensed to teach by the education standards and practices board or approved to teach by the education standards and practices board.
Reporting Progress Duties:
For the first two years, the individual shall spend an average of one hour per week in contact with the child and the child’s parent. If two or more children receive home education, the individual shall spend one-half hour per month for each additional child receiving home education. If the child attends a public or an approved nonpublic school, the time may be proportionately reduced. This time can be conducted by phone, Zoom, or in person.
During the weekly meetings, the monitor will check on the progress and work that has been completed and see that they are staying on track. If there are concerns the monitor will work with the family on addressing them. If the child is not completing any work then the monitor should contact the Assistant Superintendent who may file a 960 (mandated report for reporting suspected child abuse or neglect).
Twice during each school year, the individual shall report the child’s progress to the school district superintendent.
