Position to start Jan 3, 2019 if possible.

 

Primary Function:

  1. A high school counselor proves a comprehensive school counseling program for students in grades 9-12.  They are certified professionals who assist students, teachers, parent(s)/guardian(s) and administrators.  Counseling, consulting, and coordinating are recognized as the main components implemented in the counseling program.
  2. Counseling is a complex helping process in which the counselor establishes a trusting and confidential working relationship.  The focus is on problem solving, decision-making and discovering personal meaning related to learning and development.
  3. Consultation is a cooperative process in which the counselor-consultant assists others to think through problems and to develop skills that make them more effective in working with students.
  4. Coordination is a leadership process in which the counselor helps organize and manage a school counseling program and related services.

 

Responsibilities:                     

  1. Provide counseling services for students at both the Adult Learning Center and Community High School.
  2. Assist staff members at Community High School and the Adult Learning Center in helping enhance the learning experience of students.
  3. Refer students to appropriate agencies in our community.
  4. Assist with the class selection process for Community High School students.
  5. Lead career planning sessions with high school graduates & GED graduates.
  6. Assist with career counseling services for students with the TRIO Program and other local agencies.
  7. Compile data to assist with monthly and quarterly reports.
  8. Conduct student entrance and exit school perception data for empirical data.
  9. Lead the planning and organization for Community graduation ceremony.
  10. Lead the administration of ACT exams.
  11. Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or director

  

Additional notes on the High School Counselor Role:

 

School counselors spend a large percentage of time in direct service to students.  Indirect services include, planning, management and evaluation of counseling programs, participation in school-site planning and implementation, collaboration with postsecondary institutions, businesses and community agencies, and other tasks which enhance the mission of the program.

 

To succeed in this field, counselors must have high physical and emotional energy and a supreme ability to handle stress. They must be organized, willing to continue training over their career, and good communicators.  The daily schedule of a counselor is filled with student/parent/teacher meetings along with crisis situations arising on a regular basis not to mention many administrative duties required.
